We also have our monthly Breakfast of Champions, to drag you out of bed at the crack of 10:30 on November 18th. As usual, it’ll be at Enigma.

• This Saturday the 20th, we have the Light the Night Charity run/walk for Leukemia and Lymphoma. Come walk with fellow freethinkers and raise money and/or awareness. Foundation beyond belief is matching fundraising from secular organisations for the people who want to donate. 5:00 PM at the Lumbermen’s Arch in Stanley Park.
• After you work up a hearty appetite Lighting the Night, or if you didn’t, the morning after we’ve got the October edition of our monthly Breakfast of Champions to nosh on. Come enjoy a relaxing weekend breakfast with the early rising freethinkers. Sunday the 21st, at 10:30 AM, at Enigma (4397 10th Ave).
• Finally, our much beloved (and Spooky) Feynman’s Funtime- on All Hallow’s Eve Eve (October 30th), come enjoy games, and treats, with your fellow freethinkers. $2 Admission, free for UBC Freethinker members, starting from 5:00 pm in room 155, Irving K. Barber library. Costumes welcome.

We’re going to kick off a new year of criticial thinking with our popular boardgame social Feynman’s Funtime, today in its temporary location Buchanan D216 at 5:00 pm. Bring your favorite game and/or your favourite game-face and come meet the club exec and some of your fellow freethinkers on campus! Look forward to seeing you there.

Austin Dacey is a philosopher, author, and human rights activist whose work on issues of freedom of conscience and expression has been profiled by the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, BBC World Service, NPR, and Voice of America. His writings have appeared in numerous publications including USA Today, Dissent, and the New York Times, which ran his 2006 op-ed, “Believing in Doubt.” 

A representative to the United Nations for the International Humanist and Ethical Union, Austin has participated in international debates regarding freedom of expression, religion, and the “dialogue among civilizations,” speaking before the U.N. Human Rights Council in Geneva. His 2008 book, The Secular Conscience: Why Belief Belongs in Public Life, which argued for the central role of conscience in political and moral discourse, was embraced by figures as diverse as Sam Harris and Father Richard John Neuhaus. It was noted in North American, European, and Arabic media, and called “timely and important” by Asharq Alawsat. He holds a doctorate in applied ethics and social philosophy and has taught most recently at Polytechnic Institute of New York University in Brooklyn.

This talk will address the controversial issue of blasphemy in our society, and promises to be an exciting and lively discussion.
